Capital of the  Bituriges Cubi (according to Caesar: 30,000 inhabitants; c. 100 ha.) at the confluence of Auron and Yèvre, two tributaries of the Cher, also the location of an earlier settlement between the 8th and the 6th cent. BC, modern Bourges. In 52 BC, it was captured and destroyed by Caesar (Caes. B Gall. 7,13-28), but subsequently rebuilt.
